# Fire Extinguisher Placement Rules as Per Indian Standards

Buying the right fire extinguishers is only half the battle. Correct placement is equally critical — an inaccessible extinguisher is useless in an emergency. IS 2190 provides clear guidelines every building owner must follow.

Why Placement Matters

In a fire emergency, people will not search more than 10 metres for an extinguisher before evacuating. If it is hidden, obstructed, or inconveniently located — it won't be used.

IS 2190 Travel Distance Rules

  • Class A risks (ordinary combustibles): Maximum 15 metres walking distance from any point to nearest extinguisher
  • Class B risks (flammable liquids): Maximum 10 metres walking distance
  • Class E risks (electrical): Near all electrical panels, UPS, and server rooms
  • Visibility: Location signs posted above extinguisher if not directly visible
  • Accessibility: Path must be permanently unobstructed

Mounting Height Requirements

| Extinguisher Weight | Handle Height from Floor | |---|---| | Up to 4 kg / 4 litres | Maximum 1.5 metres | | 4–12 kg / 4–12 litres | Maximum 1.0 metre | | Above 12 kg (trolley) | Floor standing |

Extinguishers must be mounted on wall brackets — not placed on the floor where they can be moved or kicked.

Quantities Required

  • Class A areas: 1 extinguisher per 200 sq.mt. floor area, minimum 1 per floor
  • Class E areas: 1 CO2 per electrical panel / server room
  • Kitchen: 1 wet chemical per commercial cooking station cluster

Special Location Rules

  • Staircases: 1 per floor landing, visible from stairs
  • Parking areas: 1 CO2 and 1 ABC per 10 vehicle spaces
  • Generator rooms: 1 CO2 and 1 ABC near generator set
  • Reception/lobby: Easily accessible for all visitors

Common Mistakes

❌ Extinguishers in locked cabinets or behind closed doors ❌ Materials stored in front of extinguishers ❌ Mounted too high — staff cannot reach ❌ All extinguishers at one location for a large floor ❌ Wrong type for the location (ABC powder in server room)
