A fire hydrant system is a fixed fire suppression infrastructure that provides a reliable, high-volume water supply for firefighting — either by building occupants using hose reels or by the fire brigade through external hydrants. It is one of the most important fire safety systems for large buildings in India.

What Is a Fire Hydrant System?

A fire hydrant system is a network of pipes, pumps, tanks, and outlets strategically installed throughout a building and its perimeter to provide immediate water supply for firefighting. When a fire breaks out, trained personnel or firefighters can connect hoses to hydrant outlets and direct high-pressure water onto the fire.

Unlike sprinkler systems that activate automatically, hydrant systems require manual operation — but they deliver far greater water volumes for larger fire scenarios.

Internal vs External Hydrant Systems

  • *Internal Hydrant System (Inside the Building)**
  • Landing valves (internal hydrants) at every floor near staircases
  • Hose reels for occupant use — 20-metre rubber hose connected to the rising main
  • First-aid hose reel boxes at accessible locations
  • Used for fires within the building by trained staff
  • *External Hydrant System (Outside the Building / Premises Perimeter)**

  • Landing Valves – 63mm gated valves at each floor level for hose connection
  • Hose Reels – 20m rubber hoses on reels with 19mm nozzle
  • Terrace Tanks – Overhead tanks for gravity-fed backup water
  • Pressure Gauges and Flow Switches – For monitoring system pressure and flow

NBC Requirements for Fire Hydrant

As per NBC 2016 Part 4: * All buildings above 15 metres must have wet riser hydrant systems * Fire water storage: minimum 1 lakh litres for medium-hazard buildings * Pump room must have electric + diesel backup pumps * Landing valves at each floor on both sides of the building * System must sustain minimum 3.5 kg/cm² pressure at topmost outlet * External hydrants at every 45 metre perimeter interval

Installation and Commissioning

Installation follows these stages: 1. Pump room civil construction (underground/surface) 2. Fire water tank installation (RCC or steel) 3. Pump set installation and alignment 4. Main pipe laying (MS/GI pipes, schedule 40) 5. Rising main installation in shaft 6. Landing valve and hose reel installation 7. External hydrant installation 8. Full system pressure and flow testing 9. Fire department inspection and commissioning

Fire Hydrant System Maintenance

Annual maintenance includes: * Monthly pump run test (electric and diesel) * Quarterly landing valve and hose reel check * Annual full-load flow test * Water tank cleaning and level check * Valve and fitting leak check
