# Fire Pump Room Setup: Requirements and Standards in India

The fire pump room is the heart of any building's fire water supply system. It houses the pumps, controls, and piping that deliver water under pressure to sprinklers, hydrant outlets, and hose reels. A properly designed pump room is essential for Fire NOC compliance and actual firefighting effectiveness.

What Is a Fire Pump Room?

A dedicated room or enclosure housing: fire pump sets, fire water storage tank connections, pump control panel, main pipe headers and isolation valves, pressure gauges, and fire department inlet connections. Must be accessible to the fire brigade and maintenance staff at all times.

Types of Fire Pumps

  • *1. Jockey (Pressure Maintenance) Pump:** Small pump (0.5-2 HP) maintaining system pressure and detecting leaks. Auto-starts on pressure drop. If pressure continues dropping (fire demand), main pump starts.
  • *2. Main Electric Fire Pump:** Primary firefighting pump delivering design flow rate at rated pressure. Auto-starts when pressure drops below jockey pump range. Typical capacity: 900-2,700 LPM.
  • *3. Diesel Engine Backup Pump:** Required by NBC for power failure. Must start automatically on mains failure. Must run independently for minimum 6 hours.

Pump Room Location

  • Ground level or basement — easy fire brigade access
  • Dedicated room — not shared with other equipment
  • Minimum 3.5 metre clear height
  • Adequate ventilation (especially for diesel pump exhaust)
  • Lockable but accessible (master key system for fire brigade)
  • Emergency lighting on backup power
  • 2-hour fire-rated walls and ceiling

Pipe Sizing and Pressure

Pipe sizing determined by hydraulic calculation: * Main suction pipe: 150mm diameter * Main delivery pipe: 100-150mm * Landing valve connections: 63mm * System pressure at topmost outlet: minimum 3.5 kg/cm²

Electrical Requirements

  • Dedicated electrical panel for fire pump controls
  • Auto-start relay — pumps start automatically on pressure drop
  • Phase failure protection — prevents dry running
  • Mains power from building's main panel — no intermediate MCBs that could trip
  • Generator or diesel backup must ensure firefighting during power cuts

Commissioning and Testing

Before Fire NOC acceptance: * Full load flow test — verify rated flow at rated pressure * Diesel pump auto-start test on power failure * Jockey pump cycling test * All valve operation check * Complete commissioning report

Cost of Pump Room Setup

| Component | Cost | |---|---| | Pump room civil work | ₹1,00,000 – ₹3,00,000 | | Jockey pump set | ₹30,000 – ₹60,000 | | Main electric pump | ₹80,000 – ₹2,50,000 | | Diesel backup pump | ₹1,50,000 – ₹4,00,000 | | Control panel | ₹40,000 – ₹1,00,000 | | Pipe headers and valves | ₹50,000 – ₹2,00,000 | | Total (typical) | ₹4,50,000 – ₹13,00,000 |
